Secondary-world fantasies are set in an imaginary world with connections with
the real world that remain mysterious, yet with a nature and contents
intelligibly related to it. Tolkien developed in his essay his key concepts of
fantasy, recovery, escape, and consolation, which have became central to much
modern fantasy theory. Recovery permits the "regaining of a clear view,"
in Tolkien's words. Escape for Tolkien was not a psychological safety valve
but a liberation into awider reality. Consolation is the emotion generated by
the (usually) happy ending of fairy tales.
