Ian – Assistant stage manager – Royal National Theatre, London *Describe your job A: I work in the stage management team that co-ordinates the production process. I obtain rehearsal props, arrange costume fittings, call performers for rehearsals, and distribute information from rehearsals to all technical departments. I also support other members of the stage management team - in this job you have to be able to turn your hand to any number of other tasks. *What's a typical day for you? A: During rehearsals I start at 9am and prepare the rehearsal room, setting up for the scenes we'll be working on that day and making sure there is tea and coffee available. Actors arrive at 10am and I check them in and chase up any late-comers. During the rehearsal I use a laptop computer to make notes of prop and costume requirements, and anything that might affect the build of the set. For example, which way a door has to open, and I make comprehensive setting lists. Throughout the day I source props, arrange costume and wig fittings for the cast – sometimes up to 40 strong. Things change constantly so there's quite a bit of admin' to do. At the end of the day I e-mail, fax or deliver my notes to the various departments, so everyone is up-to-date with changes and new developments. During the run of the show I liaise with the stage staff about scene changes and make sure the props are where they should be. I ensure the actors have what they need in their dressing rooms and I call them before they're due to go on stage. *Who do you work with? A: I work with another ASM, a deputy stage manager and a stage manager, who is in charge of the team. But as ASM I'm constantly speaking to props, scenery, lighting and sound departments and to actors, musicians and stage staff. *How do you train for stage management? A: Most people now do a stage management course at drama school or university then look for a first job, but there are other ways to get in and gain experience. At school I joined a youth theatre and at sixth-form college I did a BTEC course in Theatre Studies. Later I did a three-year Diploma in Acting at Guildford School of Acting. I worked as an actor for several years doing touring theatre and pantomime, then spent six months as ASM at Keswick Repertory Theatre. I worked variously as ASM, DSM and company manager with different theatre companies including Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National. In between I did stage management work for corporate events, and I spent about two and a half years touring in different productions throughout the UK as well as Sweden and to New York and Washington. *How do you find work? A: Most work is found through contacts made whilst working. There are advertisements in The Stage weekly paper, and there's also a publication called Stage Management Association's Free List, in which members can advertise their availability. Current vacancies are also advertised on the Equity website. *What skills and personal qualities are important? A: ‧ excellent interpersonal skills; ‧ an eye for detail; ‧ computer-user skills; ‧ good organising skills; ‧ stamina; ‧ ability to deal with artistic temperaments; ‧ ability to cope with pressure, especially in the run-up to a performance; ‧ the ability to read music is useful; ‧ an interest in arts subjects - to identify different periods, such as art deco, rococo etc so you can describe the props you want to a props buyer. *What do you like most – and least - about your work? A: Like most - working in a team of enthusiastic people and contributing to a successful production. Like least – well, touring can be quite wearying when you're living out of a suitcase and travelling from one end of the country to the other. *What's for the future? A: I'm very happy working here at the National, but stage management skills can be used in television and films and there's a growing market in corporate event work, for example, training seminars or business conferences. *What's been your worst moment? A: As company stage manager on tour in America leading a group of actors. The van we were travelling in ran out of petrol in the middle of New York. Making sure the van's got petrol - that's just one of the many other tasks stage managers can be responsible for! A: . --
